iPad Apps V 2.0
There are many iPad apps that can be used effectively with pupils with additional learning needs. The four shared here have been chosen for their instant classroom impact, their capacity for developing musical skills, and their versatility across ability and age ranges:
Thumbjam is the go-to app for using the iPad as a live melody instrument. It is especially effective for pupils with more complex cognitive and physical needs.
Opening Garageband is like walking into a recording studio: you can play, record and layer instruments, manipulate samples, record vocals and add effects, and even employ ‘session musician’ drummers to create backing tracks for musical ideas.
Loopseque allows pupils to sequence, arrange and record musical patterns quickly and intuitively. Perhaps more than anything else in the library, it balances instant engagement with depth of musical learning.
Launchpad presents sets of vocal and instrumental loops that pupils can combine to make complete arrangements. The app’s strength lies in the quality and authenticity of its sound sets that cover a variety of genres.
On this page you will find teaching guides and 'how-to' videos for each of these apps. You will also find a video on using 'Guided Access', a cross-app feature that allows teachers to lock an iPad within a certain app and block out various parts of the screen.
